　　20世紀(jì)伊始，崛起的美國(guó)開始重視在中國(guó)的影響，而美國(guó)芝加哥大學(xué)也希望以教育溝通中西，發(fā)揮大學(xué)在中國(guó)教育的意義。與此同時(shí)，美國(guó)著名的洛克菲勒財(cái)團(tuán)不斷接到在華傳教士的請(qǐng)求，請(qǐng)求幫助他們?cè)谥袊?guó)的工作。洛克菲勒最終決定考察中國(guó)，以便決定資助方式。而這項(xiàng)任務(wù)便委托給了與洛克菲勒家族淵源深厚的芝加哥大學(xué)。1908年，芝加哥大學(xué)在洛克菲勒基金支持下，為了探索教育在中國(guó)的意義，決定派出東方教育考察團(tuán)（Oriental Educational Investigation Commission）考察中國(guó)教育，尋求合作方式。芝加哥大學(xué)選定神學(xué)院的伯頓（Ernest De Witt Burton，1856-1925）和地質(zhì)系的錢伯林（Thomas Chrowder Chamberlin，1843-1928）兩位教授擔(dān)此重任，兩人搭配是基于人文和自然科學(xué)的綜合權(quán)衡。伯頓教授伯頓為著名圣經(jīng)學(xué)者，代表人文社會(huì)方面；而錢伯林則為著名地質(zhì)學(xué)家，代表自然科學(xué)方面考察。同時(shí)任命兩位助理，輔助調(diào)查中國(guó)的教育、社會(huì)以及宗教情況。托馬斯·錢伯林為美國(guó)著名地質(zhì)學(xué)家，生于威斯康星州東部的小鎮(zhèn)比洛特（Beloit），1866年畢業(yè)于比洛特學(xué)院，并留校執(zhí)教數(shù)年，后任美國(guó)威斯康星大學(xué)校長(zhǎng)。1893年，錢伯林應(yīng)邀組建芝加哥大學(xué)地質(zhì)系，并任系主任。錢伯林對(duì)于中國(guó)的興趣至少不晚于1901年。是年，他致函芝加哥大學(xué)校長(zhǎng)哈珀（William Harper），建議芝加哥大學(xué)加強(qiáng)與中國(guó)合作，以地質(zhì)幫助中國(guó)，招收中國(guó)留學(xué)生，培育地學(xué)人才，助其開發(fā)自然資源，造福國(guó)家與人民。1909年錢伯林前往中國(guó)的愿望終于實(shí)現(xiàn)。1月4日，錢伯林在其兒子兼助理羅林·錢伯林（Rolling Thomas Chamberlin，1881-1948）的陪同下動(dòng)身前往中國(guó)【編者注：為行文方便，以下分以老錢伯林和小錢伯林代指父子二人】。小錢伯林是老錢伯林唯1的兒子，1907年從芝加哥大學(xué)地質(zhì)系獲得博士，隨后留校執(zhí)教終生。錢伯林父子此次中國(guó)考察的主要任務(wù)是考察地形，氣候以及自然資源特別是土地利用，研究他們對(duì)于教育的意義，以及教育機(jī)構(gòu)的合適選址，同時(shí)探索中國(guó)引入自然科學(xué)方法的可能性。
